THE SOUTH YARRA TERRACE HOUSE

Location

South Yarra, Victoria

The brief was to create a flexible outdoor entertaining space that flowed seamlessly from the living area. Full width glass bi-fold doors open onto a small space of just 7.0 metres x 5.4 metres, which incorporates a water feature, pond, decorative screening, storage, seating and BBQ. All landscape elements have been innovatively and successfully incorporated into the small space by ensuring that they all have a dual use. The timber screen conceals the side fence and provides support for climbers. The ‘stack stone’ wall is a water feature (with a copper water ledge) and screens the storage/bin area. The rendered walls of the raised pond also include timber benches, which act as seating. Bluestone paving laid in an irregular Ashlar pattern ties the different elements together. Planting is both decorative - Xanthorrhoea australis (Grass Tree) and functional, with espaliered Citrus sp. (Lemon and Lime) planted in a narrow garden bed in front of a rendered wall.
