20 hectares of wetlands and open space forms the central feature of Laurimar, providing a significant asset for the community. The wetland helps to store, regulate and filter water runoff from surrounding streets and has been constructed around 13 existing significant Eucalyptus camaldulensis (River Red Gum). These trees have been retained and incorporated into the wetland design through the construction of stone clad retaining walls. A network of concrete shared pedestrian/bicycle paths pass through the open space and connect to a series of boardwalks, decks and viewing platforms. Areas of seating provide views across open water. Almost 95,000 indigenous wetland and terrestrial plants were used to create the extensive wetlands and to complement the existing River Red Gums. There are also extensive areas of rockwork, garden beds and meandering paths through open lawn areas. A shelter with a curved roof provides seating and BBQ facilities and curved timber pergolas provide structure, shelter and interest along the main pedestrian path.
