The Urban Wetland is a series of hard edge formalised pools created using pre-cast concrete walls that filters storm water through a series of planted wetland ponds and open water areas. It is located next to the Caroline Springs Town Centre and has resulted in a more efficient use of land in an urban environment. The adjacent open space incorporates several pedestrian boardwalks with rusted and perforated steel balustrades and timber handrails. A significant level change has been resolved by a series of precast concrete retaining walls, terracing, handrails, ramps and steps. Two powder-coated steel pergolas with recycled timber shade battens provide seating areas overlooking the open water and wetland areas. Concrete bench seating walls and a cantilevered viewing deck overlook the wetlands and across to the formal ‘island’. A shared pedestrian/bicycle path runs through feature areas of paving, decking and Tuscan Toppings gravel. Planting in the wetland is entirely indigenous, with exotic and native plants used along the streetscape interface.
