THE BILLABONG HOUSE

Location

Mornington, Victoria

Working with De Jong Architects and the client, the back garden compliments a contemporary beach-side residence and incorporates an indigenous garden with no lawn areas centred around a ‘billabong’ water feature. The garden has been designed to be viewed from the first floor living area and deck and retains three large existing Eucalyptus sp. (Gum). Underground rainwater tanks collect all the roof water from the house and feed a rock-lined creek leading to an open water area with a timber jetty. There is a separate timber deck adjacent to the house and several informal seating areas to take advantage of different views. Built by local wetland experts Wetland and Wildlife Creations, the garden incorporates large stone boulders core-drilled to form cascading water features. The garden attracts wildlife and birds through the use of indigenous planting, all of which were locally sourced, and reclaimed timber logs create habitat areas for wildlife.
