A contemporary approach to the design of the exterior spaces followed the renovation and extension of this Victorian cottage. In order to maximise the sense of space in the front courtyard sawn bluestone paving was laid in a random Ashlar pattern. The focal point is a square cut-out in the paving for a mature Acer palmatum ‘Senkaki’ (Japanese Maple). Up-lighting, large pots and other furniture complete the space. Trachelospermum jasminoides (Star Jasmine) is trained to the southern boundary fence while Parthenocissus tricuspidata (Boston Ivy) |
and Parthenocissus quinquefolia (Virginia Creeper) cling to the remaining dark painted brick walls providing a stunning contrast throughout summer and autumn. Other plants used include; Osmanthus, Salvia, Stachys, Liriope and Arthropodium. At the rear a generously sized spotted gum deck and timber battened pergola is covered by Wisteria. A large up-lit Lagerstroemia ‘Natchez’ (White Flowering Crepe Myrtle) has been located so it can be viewed when entering the front door and dominates the space. |
